Duties & Responsibilities TRINITY UNIVERSITY JOB DESCRIPTION Title: Academic Coach Contract: 12 Months Department: Student Success Center – Academic Support SUMMARY Trinity University seeks qualified applications for the position of Academic Coach. This newly created position supports the operations of the Student Success Center – Academic Support. The Academic Coach provides individualized academic support to students; teaches an Academic Success one credit course; creates, markets, and facilitates workshops on academic success strategies; and assists in the management of the Supplemental Instruction program. The Academic Coach reports to the Director for Academic Support. DUTIES 1. Meet regularly with students for academic success coaching, creating academic success plans, and making referrals as appropriate. 2. Develop rapport and productive relationships with students by creating engaging educational materials and environments for students to grow and acquire new skills 3. Document and maintain all contact with students resulting from scheduled appointments, e-mail contact or walk-ins. 4. Teach a section of the Academic Success Course for first generation, underrepresented students (FGUS) and first-year students on academic probation 5. Provide outreach programming on behalf of Academic Support in collaboration with faculty and staff colleagues 6. Develop and present workshops on topics such as time management, reading strategies, note taking, test preparation, test anxiety, critical thinking, etc. 7. Assist in the training of tutors and Supplemental Instruction facilitators. Serve as point of contact for departments in facilitating the on-going training of tutors to achieve nationally recognized certification. 8. Assist in the evaluation and assessment of programs and services offered by Academic Support 9. Cooperates and collaborates with other employees in the spirit of teamwork and collegiality. 10. Complies with all Trinity University policies and guidelines. 11. Performs other related duties as assigned. The above statements describe the job’s essential responsibilities and requirements. Requirements EDUCATION Required: A Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, social work, or closely related field Preferred: A Master’s degree in higher education, college student personnel, education, or closely related field MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Applicants should have prior experience working in a learning center and/or in academic support in a higher education setting working with diverse students. Prior experience as a tutor is encouraged but not required. Experience in designing and facilitating workshops is preferred. Working with students from diverse backgrounds, including those with learning differences. Knowledge of: Theories, models and practices of college learning, academic success strategies (study skills, time management, organization, test taking, note taking, etc.) Knowledge of and ability to apply current best practices in student development theory when working with students Typical barriers and resources needed for at-risk students to become successful Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including tact, diplomacy, and presentation skills for small and large groups Effective organization skills with attention to detail and follow through Maintaining confidentiality of student information Experience developing procedures Demonstrated proficiency using Microsoft Office and other software and research skills PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Demonstrated understanding of academic coaching or similar type of college level academic support models Experience teaching at the college level, preferably with at-risk, first-generation and underrepresented student populations Experience managing a caseload and case files Identifying, assessing, developing, promoting and presenting workshops Working collaboratively as well as independently PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS Usual office conditions. May work under pressure to meet office deadlines and the needs of students. ATTENDANCE STANDARD Maintaining and satisfying minimum attendance requirements is an essential function of this position, including working all regular hours as established for this position and any scheduled evening or weekend commitments. All employees in this job classification are required to satisfy this requirement. This job classification may not include “light duty” work or allow unpredictable or unrestricted absences.
